Tough friends are needed for the tough times we are experiencing - and the times will only get tougher. Koinonia fellowship requires such qualities of toughness as faithfulness and forgiveness. As Paul ended his 2nd letter to Timothy (the very last letter that he wrote before his death), he needed the koinonia fellowship that he knew would come from Timothy, Luke, and John Mark. In the final verses of this epistle, we learn what tough friends for tough times looks like.
